Changes in the general economy and in style often lead to
changes in trends when it comes to home
design. One thing hasn’t changed, though, and that’s the fact that the
kitchen still tends to be a central area of the home, one that homeowners tend
to place a lot of importance on. After all, what family doesn’t spend time in
the kitchen, snacking, talking, and preparing meals? Most people would rather
have a smaller dining room or other room if it means they can have a larger,
more comfortable kitchen. And, what would any kitchen be without its cabinets?
There have been some changes in cabinetry trends in recent
years, however. For starters, people aren’t just relegating their cabinets to
the kitchen. In modern homes, it’s common to see built-in cabinetry used as storage space in the rec room or
family room. You will also find cabinets in laundry rooms and outdoor areas.
This all speaks to cabinets that are becoming less “showy”
and more convenient and practical. That doesn’t mean that style is completely
overlooked, however- especially not in the kitchen. It just means that,
especially in terms of kitchen design, today’s homeowners tend to want modern,
functional cabinets. There have also been changes in cabinetry color. While
it used to be that almost everyone went with traditional “wood” colors, like
various shades of brown, more neutral colors are now popular. Gray, for
example, is becoming an increasingly common choice because of its ability to
open up a room and keep it from looking harsh.
As mentioned, functionality is also a paramount, which means
those standard cabinets that open just one way are quickly losing popularity.
Now, cabinets are available that lift up to open, that are
retractable, or that
feature a sliding side-to-side movement capability. It’s also becoming more
common to see lighted cabinets.
There is no rule that says, as a homeowner-to-be, you have
to follow the trends. In fact, you really shouldn’t follow a trend just to
follow a trend. You should be making choices based on your preferences and your
preferences alone. However, there’s certainly nothing wrong with taking new
trends and styles, which often offer new opportunities and possibilities, into
consideration as you plan or renovate your home
