Basements are Back

Basements were practically going extinct in modern homes. People just felt like they didn’t need them anymore and like they didn’t add much value to the home, which probably has a lot to do with people’s childhood memories of their basements as dank, dark, even scary places.

In recent years, though, that’s all been changing. Basements are seeing a resurgence in popularity. More and more people are requesting to have them added into their homes, and that probably has a lot to do with the fact that today’s basements look a whole lot different from basements of the past.
Modern basements are designed to look less like dungeons and more like just another room in the home. As such, people aren’t using them just for storage anymore. Sometimes, now, they double as family or game rooms or anything else people want to turn them into. This trend has even caused a new phrase to be coined for basements. Now, many people are referring to them as “lower levels,” and they truly can be that- an extra level to the home that just happens to be on the bottom floor.
Basements can be as large or as small as people want, and they’re now being used for just about anything and everything. In addition to game rooms and family rooms, more and more basements are being turned into:

·         Home movie theaters
·         Wine storage rooms
·         Hobby rooms
·         Libraries
·         Offices

The real key is that basements can now be absolutely anything homeowners want them to be. There aren’t any restrictions or rules about what a home should be and look like. People are even putting bedrooms, bathrooms, and more down in their basement, essentially adding, as the name change suggests, another floor to their homes.

Modern basements are also being built in such a way so as to let in more beautiful, natural light. Ceilings are being raised as well to make basements feel…less like basements.

The bottom line is that you can do what you want when it comes to designing your home, but at least entertain the possibility of adding in a basement!
