Moving is serious business. There are so many things you
have to plan and prepare for. While getting a moving truck and packing up your
belongings is obvious, there are also little things you can do to make your
move a whole lot smoother!
Where’s It Going to Go?
You know, of course, what home you are moving into, but do
you really know it? Do you know the layout and dimensions of each room?
It might not sound like fun, but requesting these details from your real estate
agent or the person who designed your home is imperative. When you know the
details ahead of time, you can order furniture that will actually fit into your
home comfortably and stylishly. Furthermore, you can also have your movers put
furniture exactly where it’s supposed to go by mapping out each room ahead of
time. That will save you the time, pain, and hassle of having to move bulky
items yourself after the movers have departed.
Choose Your Color
If you’ve had a home built for you, then you have the luxury
of customizing every last square inch of it. If you’re buying a used home,
however, there are likely going to be changes you want to make. And, while many
of those changes can wait until later, after you’re settled, others are ones
you’ll be smart to take care of ahead of time. Painting falls into this
category in a major way. Each room’s style will likely depend heavily on the
color of its walls, so by painting ahead of time, or at least choosing colors,
you can keep “style disasters” from happening.
Get Powered Up
Finally, make sure you don’t forget to have the power,
water, and other utilities on on your move-in-date. Many a new homeowner has
had to suffer in an uncomfortable home or rent a hotel because of this
oversight. Alert your utility companies to your exact move-in date and time,
and most will make sure one set of utilities (in your old home) is powering
down as your new ones are powering up. Having everything powered on and good to
go will give you a good feeling about your first night in your new home. In
fact, all of these tips will help you to make the most of your new living space
and to start off on the right foot.
