Modern Homes are More Spacious than Ever

Over the years, it becomes easy to notice trends in the housing industry. One big trend in recent years, for example, is that homes are a lot larger and more spacious than they once were. Even homes that are on the smaller side frequently feature more open floor plans than they once did, at least making them feel and appear more spacious. In addition to open floor plans, there are many other features that can make a home appear to be or actually be more spacious. Read on to learn about some of the latest “fashions” in spacious home design.

Higher Ceilings

Higher than average ceilings are very good for opening up a space. Having ceilings that hover 15 feet overhead can really open up a room and make it appear a whole lot larger and airier. Many people opt for high ceilings all throughout their homes while others only choose high ceilings for “high traffic” rooms and areas, such as entryways and family rooms.

Extra Stories

The vast majority of homes being built today feature at least two stories or floors. That’s because, for the average family to get all the space it needs, at least two floors are necessary. Trying to jam all the things people want today- like several bedrooms and bathrooms- on one floor makes things cramped and uncomfortable but spreading them out over two or more stories makes for a nice, non-claustrophobic living environment.

Fewer Walls

Yet another easy way to make a home more spacious is to eliminate or at least cut back on dividers, such as walls, in the home. Having only one wall between a space or having no walls makes for a home that flows and feels connected while still maintaining its roominess.

Getting Rid of Unnecessary Rooms

Few people actually sit and eat in formal dining rooms anymore. Similarly, most people don’t really need an entire room to act as a library or a study, especially with laptops and e-books being so common. As such, many people are opting out of these pointless rooms and replacing them with more open space or with more useful or fun rooms, like game rooms and home gyms.

Lightening Things Up

For those who simply want to make their homes appear larger, windows, skylights, and other openings that let in light are the way to go. Light really has a way of making a room look more open and breathable, so the more light that comes streaming in, the larger a home will look. Similarly, lighter colored paints, furniture, and decorations can also give the illusion of a more spacious home.

Whether you want to make your home appear more spacious or want it to actually be as roomy as possible, most modern builders are well versed in the “spacious trend” and can help you to achieve the results you want.
